PDF or Word for ATS?
Many modern systems read text based PDFs well, and some older ones handle Word files more reliably. The safest move is to follow the job posting. If it asks for a .docx, send a .docx. If it does not say, a text based PDF is usually fine. Avoid scanned or image only PDFs because there is no text to read.
How to check your PDF is readable
- Open it and try to highlight a line of text. If you can, it is real text.
- Copy everything and paste it into a plain text editor. Check the order makes sense.
- Make sure your name and email are in the body, not the page header.
